What is the Grand National

The Grand National is the biggest horse race in the World and especially in the UK as it is the day that everybody wants to place a bet on the horses and for many it will their first bet or their only bet of the year. The Grand National has been running since 1839 when it was won by a horse called Lottery and this was an omen as the race itself is regarded as a bit of a lottery and for many they back on it for this very reason as any horse can win.

The Grand National history goes all the way back to 1839 when the owner of Liverpool's Waterloo Hotel, Mr William Lynn leased land from Lord Sefton set out the course and the first Grand National was run that year and won by Lottery. In the latest development of the course one of the two new stands was named after Lord Sefton.

Each year the Grand National throws up a really great story concerning the winner and this is another reason why the British public have taken to this particular horse race so well. One of the most famous of all Grand National betting odds winners was Red Rum trained by Ginger McCain who won the race a total of three times and is buried at the winning post of the Grand National course.

Aldaniti is another famous winner as his jockey Bob Champion was fighting cancer and since his victory has raised loads of money for his charity cancer. Foinavon won the 1967 national when virtually the whole field fell or refused at one of the smallest fences on the course except Foinavon who managed to get to the other side and as such the fence was named after him.
