Grand National Horses - 2006 GrandNational Runners

These are the main players, the stars of the show. There is a maximum field of 40 runners for the Grand National as this is what is considered the maximum amount of runners that is considered safe to run over the Grand National Course. Some describe the run to the first fence as something of a cavalry charge akin to something you might see in a western movie.

Each year there a hundreds of entries for the big race and only the top rated 40 chasers get to run in the big race. The ratings are based on the horse's performance over the past few years and only those that make the grade get to participate in the Grand National Betting.

As this is a handicap and what is meant by this is that the best horse based on past performances is given the top weight. You would be correct in thinking that the top rated horse then is the best horse and this would be a good assumption. However what happens is that the trainers of the horses that are specifically trained for the Aintree Grand National protect their handicap markets by not running them in races that if they win will increase their weight, so they run them over shorter distance races which they will not win or over the smaller fences called hurdles, so they will get fit but not get more weight. This makes Selecting the Grand National Winner more difficult as it is difficult to compare the form as these horses rarely do not line up against each other during the year nor do they run over the extreme distance run in the Grand National.

The Grand National field is not known until the week of the big race and when it is announced we shall be putting up the Aintree Grand National 2006 racecard for you to go through and review which horse you think may be the 2006 Grand National winner.
