The Grand National has been running since 1839 when ironically it was won by a horse called Lottery, since that time many believe that the race is somewhat of a lottery and one where any horse can win.

Aintree Course GuideThe Grand National history goes all the way back to 1839 when the owner of Liverpool's Waterloo Hotel, Mr William Lynn leased land from Lord Sefton set out the course and the first Grand National was run that year and won by Lottery. In the latest development of the course one of the two new stands was named after Lord Sefton.

Each year the National throws up a really great story, usually concerning the winner which provides another reason why the British public have taken to this particular horse race so well. One of the most famous of all Grand National betting odds winners was Red Rum trained by Ginger McCain who won the race a total of three times and was buried twice and is buried at the winning post of the Grand National course.

Aldaniti is another famous winner as his jockey Bob Champion was fighting cancer and since his victory has raised loads of money for his charity cancer. Foinavon won the 1967 national when virtually the whole field fell or refused at one of the smallest fences on the course except Foinavon who managed to get to the other side and as such the fence was named after him.
