The Irish National History

Irish Horse RacingThe Irish Grand National started in 1870 and the very first winner was a horse called Sir Robert and it is one of the oldest big races on the National Hunt Racing calendar.

The great race takes place over three miles, five furlongs and is open to five-year-olds and over and as this race is run during Easter which usually comes in April the ground is generally on the good side. There has been a number of jumping super stars who have come to the Fairyhouse track and conquered which we cover in our previous winners section.

Irish National Results

The years of 1964 and 1990 will be remembered ahead of all others as two of the greats in Arkle in 1964 and Desert Orchid in 1990 came to Fairyhouse and won this great race as both horses were idolised by fans of UK horse racing and Ireland and these will always be regarded as the best two horses to have won this great race.

It is very rare that this race is won by any horse twice but a horse called Brown lad won it three times in 1975, 1976 and 1978.
